It is through the ordinary that humans have the opportunity to become extraordinary.
The ordinary consists of the DNA we all possess; the contents are nothing more than the values we emulate and live by. The ordinary is the interaction humans have with each other that helps us gel or become disconnected.
I was fortunate enough this weekend to view the U.S. motion picture, “Wonder.” It is the story of a ten year boy with a rare facial deformity who had twenty-seven surgeries and tries to fit into a new school having previously been home schooled.
Do you ever recall in your lives being subjected to or having witnessed ridicule, bullying, or harassment of any kind? This kind of conduct unfortunately starts early in our lives and cuts sharply into anyone’s psyche.
This ten year old boy, Augie Pullman, is stared at, made fun of, laughed at, and has a difficult time being accepted for who he is. Frankly, he cannot overcome his doubts about how he looks or the fact that other students do not see beyond the obvious.
In due time and under difficult circumstances he is eventually accepted due to his ordinaryself as a kind, generous, and funny kid. At the end of the school year he is nominated by the administration and presented an award for standing out.
It is through the ordinary that Augie becomes extraordinary.
I do not wish to discourage anyone from becoming extraordinary. Dreams start in our souls and reside in our moral compasses.
Do remember that this classification of another human is rare. It is a label bestowed on some, but very much built through the ordinary.
What is the ordinary?
1) It is selfless conduct
2) It is the willingness to give and be generous
3) It is grace, respect, courtesy, and humility
4) It is tears of joy based on the idea that love is the ultimate glue
Our journeys are largely defined by the ordinary. Find your purpose, passion, and pursue dreams that matter.
My friends please remember this: respect, consideration, and courtesy matter a lot. Treat others fairly, decently, and equally.
Build your moral compasses carefully and always monitor them daily.
You know the battle cry: do your best each day. No one can ask more or less from any of us.
All the best/blessings, Mark
